For many people, cleansing the skin, and then applying toner, serum and moisturiser is as natural as 123. Others may find it not so obvious. Do you remove your makeup first, or do you think that your cleanser will do that at the same time? Here you will find the answers you need to get the most out of your skincare products.
Start by removing your makeup
Not all cleansing products are strong enough to work on waterproof makeup, for example. And the eye area is so delicate that rubbing and scouring should definitely be avoided. Try this tip: put a little makeup remover on a cotton wool pad and hold it against your eye for a few seconds, so that the makeup loosens and you can simply wipe it off. This will avoid unnecessary irritation and unattractive red eyes.
Then you are ready for your favourite cleanser
Start at the corners of your mouth and work upwards and inwards towards your nose, up your forehead and around your cheeks. Repeat the process for a couple of minutes for the best effect and optimal removal of grime, perspiration and other residues. Then rinse your face with plenty of lukewarm water (this is the most effective way of getting rid of bacteria). Then finally, you pat your skin dry with a clean, dry towel or facecloth.
Freshly cleansed skin is receptive to nourishment
Once cleansed, the nourishment that you apply to your skin will really come into its own. Toners, serums and moisturisers will be well absorbed into your skin and have the best effect, since there will be no superfluous particles blocking the way. Apply your chosen skincare products while your skin is still a little damp. This is when your pores are open and extra receptive.
Makeup remover wipes are best kept for when you are on the move
Most makeup remover wipes contain fairly aggressive active ingredients, as well as a number of preservatives that are intended to ensure they keep their cleansing properties for a fairly long time in a small, watertight pack. This can easily lead to dry and irritated skin. That is why they are recommended for use when you are on the move, but you should always finish by washing of any product residues and applying a nourishing toner.
